چکیده

Recall that last time we have introduced the set of weights Wt(n) ⊂ C and an equivalence relation ∼ on Wt(n). Our goal is to describe this set and this equivalence relation – the equivalence classes are in a natural bijection with Irr(Sn). The first step here is as follows. Pick a path P = V 1 → V 2 → . . . → V n in the branching graph and an integer k with 1 < k < n. We fix all vertices but V k and vary V . The questions that we are going

Lecture 1: Representations of Symmetric Groups, I

In this lecture we start to study the representation theory of the symmetric groups Sn over C. Let us summarize a few things that we already know. 0) A representation of Sn is the same thing as a representation of the group algebra CSn. 1) As with all finite groups, any representation of Sn over C is completely reducible. 2) The number of irreducible representations of Sn coincides with the num...

Monomial Irreducible sln-Modules

In this article, we introduce monomial irreducible representations of the special linear Lie algebra $sln$. We will show that this kind of representations have bases for which the action of the Chevalley generators of the Lie algebra on the basis elements can be given by a simple formula.

Cohomological invariants associated to symmetric bilinear forms

This paper is an outgrowth of the notes for a lecture given at the Mathematics Department of Queen’s University in December of 1988. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of that department for their hospitality during my visit. I would also like to thank Bruno Kahn for reading early versions of this manuscript and making several helpful remarks. The basic idea of the lectu...

Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach Representations of Finite Groups the Meeting Was Organized

(Birmingham). In eight lectures of 50 minutes length each and 26 short contributions of 30 minutes each, results and developments of the past few years as well as challenges for the future were outlined. Representation theory of nite groups has grown into a huge area touching and interrelating to many other elds in mathematics. It was felt that the special format of organizing the talks chosen ...
